The 92-page bilingual (English and French) hardcover coffee table book retails for $60 CAD with 100 per cent of the proceeds being donated to sponsor and support breast cancer survivors’ dragon boat teams across Canada. Teams include Dragons Abreast (Toronto), Abreast in a Boat (Vancouver) and The West Island Dragons (Montreal).

Photographed by award winning Canadian fine art photographer Tash Damjanovic, the first section of the book shares a collection of intimate images of the women wearing lingerie designed for post-breast cancer surgery from book sponsor Anita Canada alongside memories of each woman’s journey through breast cancer. The second section of the book, also photographed by Damjanovic, showcases powerful imagery of the women’s courageous nature as they dragon boat race, alongside commentary about how dragon boat racing inspired a passion in each of them and their fight against breast cancer.

Cheryl Pounder, two-time Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist, wrote the forward to the book to honour her mother who is a breast cancer survivor and avid dragon boater who paddled with the Dragon’s Abreast club in Toronto from 1998 through 2013.

Photographing the women for this book was a true inspiration, you can feel their grace and courage in every image,” said Tash Damjanovic. “Most of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, and with Beautiful Body, Unbreakable Spirit our goal was to share stories about women who are living, or lived, full and active lives after their diagnosis to inspire others and to help support the breast cancer dragon boating movement.”

Beautiful Body, Unbreakable Spirit is dedicated to the memory of Dragons Abreast dragon boat team member Joanna Chrystal – adventurer, mother, philanthropist – who had planned on participating in this project but sadly lost her life to cancer in 2020.

Dragon boating among breast cancer survivors was unimaginable 25 years ago when women who had breast cancer diagnoses were advised to avoid any strenuous upper body activity. What originated in Canada as a way to resist the idea that breast cancer was a life-limiting diagnosis, dragon boating for breast cancer survivors has become a global movement. Anita Canada has been a proud supporter of breast cancer dragon boat teams since 2017 and we are thrilled to be able to help make the Beautiful Body, Unbreakable Spirit project come to life,” said Olivia Leroux, Marketing and Sales Director, Anita Canada.

Available starting October 1, 2021 Beautiful Body, Unbreakable Spirit is available to purchase at beautifulunbreakable.com. Shipping available across Canada. One hundred per cent of proceeds will be donated to sponsor breast cancer survivors’ dragon boat teams across Canada.

About Beautiful Body, Unbreakable Spirit: Beautiful Body, Unbreakable Spirit is a Canadian fine art photography book that explores the breast cancer journeys of seven women and the relationship between the female body, womanhood and femininity. Photographed by award-winning fine art photographer Tash Damjanovic the book seeks to understand where these feelings are anchored and how they change when organs typically associated with womanhood and femininity – the breasts – are altered or lost.

The book also celebrates the courage of these women, who took up dragon boat racing after their diagnosis. Each woman has a story of struggle that defines the evolution of their beautiful body and unbreakable spirit, offering inspiration that life after breast cancer can be active, enchanting and beautiful. Beautiful Body, Unbreakable Spirit was made possible by sponsor Anita Canada, a women’s fine lingerie and swimwear brand who are pioneers in post-breast cancer surgery lingerie, swimwear and hand-crafted natural external breast forms.
